SDCC Highlights, Panels and Cosplay
This year's event was a full one for Wicked Tree Press
It was another great year on the floor representing Wicked Tree Press alongside
from Wannabe Press.I was honored to participate in four great panels. I was bummed I had to turn down two equally wonderful events because of the realities of space and time. Hopefully next year I can say yes to them all.
Pathways to Libraries for Indie Creators was held at the San Diego Library. It’s so important for us indie creators to nurture our relationships with librarians but it is also challenging. So glad to be part of the work to make it easier. There were three amazing librarians on the panel - Christina Taylor, Moni Barette, and Hillary Chang. If you haven’t had the chance, please check out the work of Eisner-nominated Jordan Hart and Barbra Dillin of Fanbase Press, my fellow writer and publisher panelists.
It was a full house at the hilarious Men Writing Women panel. These ladies and the crowd were so thought-provoking and funny. You can find one of the other talented panelists
here on Substack. Rachel E. Beck, Rachel Rener, and Nicolette Andrews are all also wonderful panelists and novelists but not on substack.Monstrous Women was such a great convo about how powerful women have been turned monster throughout history in our storytelling and our every day lives. We did this by talking about myths, monsters, and magic. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture yet.
Here is a pic of everyone at Creators Assemble. This annual event brings seasoned comics professionals, librarians, and beginners together every year. It’s been a pleasure to move from beginner to semi-seasoned professional.
On a super exciting note, I was able to introduce our newest monster who will be central to our next book, The Killing Stone. Please meet Nari! She is an onyrō or grudge spirit from Japanese folklore and will be helping Shel and team deal with some monster-size grudges.
And no convention is complete without the cosplayers! Here are some awesome cosplayers holding the Mary Shelley’s School for Monsters award winning graphic novel. They were some of my absolute favs. Side note - if a cosplayer is dressed up like a Monster High character, they are definitely taking home a Mary Shelley’s School for Monster book.
This year, I barely escaped San Diego with my life with all the Cordyceps running around.
I tried to hide in here…
Luckily, by the end of comic con, I was basically a zombie so I was able to blend it and survive. I’ve almost returned to my human form. Almost.
I am running a post SDCC special promo for those of you who could not make SDCC. I want you to enjoy a bit of the convention from the peace and quiet of your own home. If you order the La La Llorona in the Machine graphic novel from now until August 4th, you will receive the brand new convention exclusive comic Origins 2 that sets up the next chapter in the Mary Shelley’s School for Monsters chapter. This comic is exclusive to Kickstarter and conventions so this is the only other time to get one outside of in-person events or as a backer.
A few amazing subscribers stopped by and chatted which was so epic! Thank you for reading Monster of the Week and coming to meet me in real life. It’s great being on this journey through the deep, dark woods with you all. Very cool.
Safe travels and coexist with the kaiju!
