Hello lovelies,
Whether in real life or traveling through a wonderful sci-fi or fantasy world, it is nice to feel a sense of belonging and recognition. Whether it’s a nod and warm smile when entering a cafe or seeing ourselves in an author’s protagonist—a sense of belonging is important. I hope some of you feel that sense of belonging and recognition when you receive my newsletter and read one of my stories. I know with each subscriber and comment or share, I feel that all too important connection. I am grateful to you all for being here with me.
I volunteer for different groups in a variety of ways. Part of why I do that is to offer that smile or nod to a person who may not always get one. Another reason is to work alongside like-minded individuals toward a common goal that we all care about enough to give it our precious time.
One of my volunteer gigs for several years has been the comic committee chair for SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association). Previously, the committee along with the SFWA board had succeeded in expanding membership to include comics writers. Today, we had another success. SFWA announced that comics will have its own Nebula Award category. Poetry too.
As a sci-fi and fantasy writer both in prose and comics, this is so exciting. It is important to recognize the wonderful talent and artistry that is involved in sequential art storytelling. It is really important to include comics writers in the SFWA community. The organization acts as an additional ally and advocate for those writers that they very much need and deserve.
The comics committee will continue to foster community and offer programming to support and connect SFWA members. We currently have a monthly meet-up that all members are welcome to join. Our next meet-up is informal and takes place on December 14th at 2pm. We will be discussing our favorite reads of 2024. Most meet-ups are informal but we do have special speakers and topics occasionally. We’ve covered Traditional Comics Publishing 101, Crowdfunding Basics for Comics Creators and Authors, and our January chat will involve an expert diving into comics contracts with a Q&A afterwards.
In other news, I am reviewing the final proof of Mary Shelley’s School for Monsters: The Killing Stone. It is looking truly amazing, and I’m super pleased with the work Matt Krotzer is doing over at Metal Ninja Studios on lettering and design. We will be sending it off to Lily over at Alpaca Printing next week. For now, book one is available and makes a wonderful holiday gift.
Also, here is an interview I did with Rachel Bellwoar over at ComicCon.com. I really appreciated her thoughtful questions.
We have a monster gift set over at the Wicked Tree Press store. This set is a perfect personalized gift for the special graphic novel and monster lover in your life (ages 8-99+).
